About SBRMG
SBRMG stands for Santa Barbara Referral Marketing Group. We are a professional business networking organization based in Santa Barbara, California, founded in 2019. Our focus is on generating high-quality business referrals through a process called the "warm introduction" — where members personally introduce referrals rather than simply handing over a business card. This personal endorsement transfers the referring member's credibility to the connection, significantly increasing the likelihood of doing business together.
A warm introduction is when an SBRMG member personally introduces a potential client to another member, rather than just passing along contact information. The referring member speaks directly to the prospect, vouches for the member's expertise and character, and facilitates the connection. This personal endorsement transfers the referring member's integrity and trust to the new relationship. Research consistently shows that warm referrals close at dramatically higher rates than cold outreach — because the prospect already has a reason to trust the person they are being referred to.
SBRMG meets every Wednesday morning at 7:30am at Cody's Cafe, located at 5735 Hollister Ave, Goleta, CA 93117. Meetings typically run until approximately 9:00am. We do not meet during holiday weeks — check our events calendar for any schedule changes. Cody's Cafe is a beloved Santa Barbara institution known for its warm atmosphere and excellent breakfast, making it the perfect setting for building genuine business relationships.
Membership & Cost
SBRMG membership is just $10 per month, paid annually when you join ($120 per year). This makes SBRMG one of the most affordable professional networking groups in Santa Barbara. There are no hidden fees, no per-meeting charges, and no upsells. The low cost is intentional — we believe the value of the referrals and relationships you build should far outweigh any membership investment.
Yes — SBRMG is exclusive to one member per business category. We would never have two realtors, two insurance agents, or two web designers in the same group. This exclusivity is one of our most valuable features: when you join, you become the go-to professional in your category for every other member in the group. Every referral in your field flows to you. This structure also means that if your category is already filled, you would need to wait for an opening or check whether an adjacent category is available.
Absolutely — and we encourage it. Prospective members are welcome to attend as our guest before making any commitment. There is no pressure and no obligation. Simply request a guest invitation through our contact form and we will personally invite you to an upcoming Wednesday meeting. You can attend as a guest as many times as you like before deciding whether SBRMG is the right fit for your business.
Meetings & Attendance
A typical SBRMG Wednesday meeting runs approximately 90 minutes and follows a structured agenda. Members arrive around 7:15am to enjoy breakfast and informal networking before the meeting begins at 7:30am. The meeting includes a 60-second business spotlight for each member (where you share your business and your ideal referral for the week), referral passing, reporting of closed business and thank-yous, a featured member presentation (8-10 minutes), a marketing education segment, and announcements. The structured format ensures every meeting is productive and every member gets visibility.
SBRMG members are expected to attend each weekly meeting. We understand that conflicts arise, so our policy allows members to send a substitute when they cannot attend. However, repeated absences without a substitute — after several occurrences — can result in your category position being made available to new members following a vote by our leadership team. Consistent attendance is what makes the group work: the more you show up, the more your fellow members understand your business and can refer you effectively.
You can apply to join SBRMG by completing our online membership application on the Join page of this website. Before applying, we recommend attending at least one meeting as a guest so you can meet the members and confirm that your category is open. Once your application is reviewed and approved by our leadership team, you will be contacted with next steps. Membership is $120 per year, paid at the time of joining.
Member Portal & Education
The SBRMG member portal is a private online platform available to all active members. Through the portal, you can maintain your business profile (including bio, photo, gallery, and ideal referral description), give and track referrals, log one-to-one meetings with fellow members, report closed business and thank-yous (with dollar amounts), write and receive testimonials, view the full member directory, and access the events calendar. The portal is designed to help you get maximum value from your membership by keeping your network informed and your activity visible.
Yes — marketing education is a core part of the SBRMG mission. Each meeting includes a dedicated education segment focused on practical marketing strategies for small business owners. Topics rotate through areas like referral marketing, social media, content strategy, local SEO, ideal client profiling, and more. Our blog also publishes regular articles on small business marketing, written to be immediately actionable for Santa Barbara professionals.
Comparisons & Contact
SBRMG shares BNI's core philosophy of structured referral networking with one member per category, but we operate with a distinctly different culture and cost structure. SBRMG membership is $10/month ($120/year) compared to BNI's significantly higher annual fees. Our group is intentionally smaller and more intimate, fostering deeper relationships and more personalized introductions. We emphasize the "warm introduction" — a personal, relationship-driven referral — rather than a transactional referral slip. We also place a strong emphasis on mentor education in marketing, helping members grow their businesses beyond just referrals.
SBRMG is focused on the Santa Barbara and Goleta business community. While there is no strict geographic requirement, our members primarily serve clients in the Santa Barbara area, and our meetings are held in Goleta (part of greater Santa Barbara). If you serve Santa Barbara-area clients and are looking to build relationships with other local professionals, SBRMG is an excellent fit regardless of where your business is physically located.
The best way to reach us is through the contact form on our website. We do not have a dedicated phone line, but we respond to all inquiries promptly. You can also request a guest invitation to attend a meeting through the contact form — just select "I'd like to attend as a guest" and we'll be in touch within one business day.
